Character Creation
Character Types
Having gone back and forth on the question a few times over the last couple of weeks I've settled on a similar formula to one I have used successfully in the past, namely rather than having a mixed group or a group with a slayer and white hats, I've decided to go for an all white hat game. The problem with the alternatives are that if I allow harder characters then the game will become like a supers game too quickly and if I have one slayer and everyone else is a norm then that makes it awkward if the person playing the Slayer doesn't turn up (as we saw in the Te Deum game). However, aside from Vampires and other demons, I am allowing supernatural characters. Choose carefully though as you won't be able to add to these powers later.
Building Points
As you're university students, I'm splitting the different between Buffy and Angel in terms of starting power.
- 15 Attribute Points
- 20 Skill Points
- 20 Drama Points
- 10 Quality Points
- Up to an Additional 10 Quality Points can be Purchased using Drawbacks.
NBs on Point Spending
An attribute score of 2 is human average, an attribute score of 6 is human maximum. It's one for one attribute point but if you want to go over 5 this changes to three for one.
A skill score of 2 represents general competence with 4 or 5 representing extreme competence arrising from intense study and more representing extreme mastery. It's one for one skill point but if you want to go over 5 this changes to three for one with the maximum being 10.
House Rules
The most significant change is that, due to the period, I'm dropping the Computers skill and I'm replacing it with Bureaucracy. This covers similar ground but it is there to reflect the fact that the game takes place in the age of planned economies rather than the information age. If you want something from the government, the college or even the local council then this is the key skill. It also doubles as a non-criminal law skill should anyone want to go down that particular route.
D'apres John Kim : The "Resources Quality" is a funny beast as it defines wealth in social terms rather than in practical terms. I'm changing the quality to that of Resourcefulness -
- Baseline
- You can buy normal stuff and may even have a car or house. However, you have no guns or special gadgets, and do not use your money on adventures such as bribes. You may be relatively wealthy, in which case (1) your money is tied up in investments, (2) you lack savvy to use your money on adventures, and/or (3) you are unwilling to spend it.
- Resourceful: 4 point Quality
- You have things like a stash full of medieval weapons, a secret room or office, and other special gear. You can bribe people with money or perhaps favors/connections (+3 to Influence under appropriate circumstances). With effort and possibly an Int + appropriate skill roll, you can do things like get legal but hard-to-find equipment, an untraceable car perhaps, and other mundane resources. With a drama point this could do more. This would probably be Xander's level. Someone who is really rich (millionaire or close) should always have at least this level.
- Very Resourceful: 7 point Quality
- You may have a safe hideout and multiple caches of weapons, possibly with military-grade stuff for yourself (only) -- such as armor or a gas mask. With effort and a skill roll, you can get specialized equipment like explosives, tear gas, rubber bullets and such. You have +6 to Influence under appropriate circumstances (bribe, call in favors, etc.). This would be Riley's level.
